I love the kidlit community. It is warm, welcoming, and generous. So when I learned about the Read Local Challenge in my area (around the time that I started thinking about promoting my book), I signed right up. Can you spot my book cover on the poster?
Organized by the MD/DE/WV chapter of SCBWI, the Read Local Challenge highlights authors and illustrators in those three states, plus Virginia and Washington, D.C. Schools and libraries are encouraged to participate by reading books by local authors, attending book parties and other events, and entering the challenge contest. Who wouldn’t like to win a signed book or a classroom Skype visit?
Another perk of this challenge is the 10% discount on speaking fees that each of the participating authors and illustrators offers to schools and libraries. I can’t wait to make some local school connections and share my book with the ones that matter most in this business: kids!
Over the summer, this website will be updated for the 2018-2019 school year. But in the meantime, how about a summer challenge?
Read — Share — Win!!! (And, in case you are wondering, anyone from any state can participate.) So get out there and enjoy some fun in the sun. And don’t forget to bring a book along. 🙂
